Tuesday Topic: Travel documents

Shannon asked: How do you or what do you use to keep all your papers organized when travelling overseas (ie: birth certificates, passports, tickets, etc)? I'm trying to figure out the best way to keep everything organized.

  1. My husband wears a shirt with a top pocket that he keeps the passports with their respective tickets in. Then he handles the check in while I keep the little one happy. When going through security & boarding, he hands them all over, and makes sure to get them all back. That works well for us :)

  2. Good and practical topic! I like it! We use a clear envelope-style folder to keep all of the documents that we need for travel. We try to keep the boarding passes in order of the various legs of the journey and keep them inside of each of the passports, inside of the folder. We don't need birth certificates for travel, but those would go in the folder too if we needed them. We also fill out our migration cards while on the flight (a document required by Russia) and then put them in the passports in the folder after they are finished. If you have to fill out migration cards, always ask the flight attendant for extras in case you make mistakes! =) I keep the documents hidden in a bag that I guard with my life! =)

  3. We just have a plain folder that my husband keeps. It's always his job to handle the documents and mine to keep the children when we're going through any kind of checkpoint.

We do need to travel with our children's birth certificates when we go on trains, and we had those laminated. I don't know if you can usually do that? It seems weird to me to have documents laminated, but it's really nice for us here.

  4. We have a passport wallet that we had made to hold all our passports, boarding passes, a pen. I wrote about it here...yeah, a whole post about it because it's just that cool :) http://nlkamper.blogspot.com/search?q=passport For all the other docs that we don't need on flights, but are important we use a clear plastic folder and put it in a carry on suitcase so it's close at hand.

  5. We do something similar to Phyllis - hubby deals with the documents and I deal with the kiddos (except sometimes some places we have to split up/divide and conquer). He keeps passports in age order with yellow card, vaccination record (we are supposed to travel with both, at least in W. Africa. not sure what it is like in the rest of the world.) and embarking/disembarking cards. Sometimes, officials like for the older kids to carry their own paperwork, so he hands it out as appropriate and then collects it all again. Usually, he just keeps it all in an 9x11 large envelop that he can then fold and keeps in an inside pocket of his travel vest. He also shoves a pen or two inside the envelope as well. If he needs to remove the travel vest, the paperwork stays in his hand. So far, this system has worked for us - with 10 sets of paperwork.
