Tuesday topic: Welcoming newcomers
What was the nicest thing someone did for you when you first arrived on the mission field? How would you like to welcome new missionaries and help them adjust?

Cooking a few meals for them until they figure out the market. Listening and encouraging them right where they are at :-)
ReplyDeletebrought cookies to our house the very first morning we were there...
ReplyDeleteInvite them around for a meal so they don't have to figure out how to cook/get food. When I first came to the field, a friend took me on a tour of the city centre so I'd know where all the charity shops and places to find good deals are.
ReplyDeleteintroduced my girls to their new best friend. Babysat so we could go furniture shopping and unpack without the chaos of little kids as well.
ReplyDeleteWe had friends who helped us by cooking us a couple of meals, stocking our fridge with some basics, and taking us shopping for the things that we needed to get settled in. I was so thankful for the help in knowing how to buy groceries and took good notes on what things were since I couldn't read any of the labels at first. =) I'd love to do the same for any newcomers, as well as just make sure to be available and to check in often to see how they are doing and to make sure they know that people care and understand about the huge transition that they're going through, and there is always help available.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't know anyone when we arrived and only had spent a few days total with our Honduran pastor and his wife. They were wonderful in helping us purchase furniture, food, appliances, etc. etc. Another seemingly small thing - another missionary family reached out to us by inviting us for dinner, but they also gave us a bucket and a ton of rags. Sounds silly, but when you arrive with only the essentials and "special" things in suitcases, needing to buy a million things and clean the new home top to bottom, those rags were actually a huge help!
