Tuesday Topic: Thanking supporters

Wendy writes: How do you show thanks to those who have financially supported you? This was something I wasn't sure how to do well. Our church was able to give us the names of those people who donated money to us and we sent them handmade cards of thanks, but we wondered what other people did.

  1. We write hand written thank yous once a year. Every couple of years we find a small book to send each one of them. Yes, it does add up to be an expense, but we think that it is worth it. 9+ years on support now and God has faithfully met every need through our supporters.

  2. We do handwritten notes once a year and for major life events of those we know of we send them something (marriage or birth). We try and bring back small things for them (bookmarks or jewelry or?) mainly we thank them by keeping them informed!

  3. We do thank you notes once a year to our regular supporters. We use postcards -- not only are they cheaper to mail, but we find that people really enjoy getting a postcard from another country. Our regular supporters also receive our Christmas card with recent family picture. I also try to send thank-you notes to those who send a one-time gift, and will usually include a family picture or magnet.

  4. We do some of the other ideas written about here. We also try to send a special, snail mail update and thank you note around the annual anniversary of our arrival here on the mission field. Every couple of years, we also send a small gift, usually coffee from the town we live in here.

  5. Ditto for us here. We take back gifts every time we go home. Once every 5 years or so we've given a more expensive gift, like a book, one time a scripture calendar. I'm not so good at handwritten notes anymore. My husband does that. But I try to stay in touch with supporting friends via e-mail.
