Tuesday Topic: Introductions

Without wasting time, without further ado, our first...
Tuesday Topic!

I love the Tuesday Topics from Missionary Moms, so I'm continuing that tradition here already, from the very beginning. This is where we really get to share and interact with one another. Join in and let us hear from you!

We'll start with something very basic: Who are you? Where do you minister? What ages are your children? Please introduce yourself (again?)! And if you're not officially a missionary, and/or not a mom, please still tell us about yourself. We want you to feel welcome here, even if you're not in both/either of those categories.

(I have some generic Tuesday Topics scheduled for the next little while. If you have a question of your own to suggest, please email it to me at fylliska@gmail.com. Please do send in whatever you think of; it would really help me. Provide your blog address if you would like to be linked to, or specify if you would like to remain anonymous. Thanks!)

  5. My husband, Jamin, and I serve in St. Petersburg, Russia in ministry to university students, though my primary ministry at this point is reaching out to the moms and kids in my community and at my kids' school, and a bit of women's ministry. We have 3 kids, Joyelle (6 1/2), Silas (4 1/2), and Elsie (almost 2), and as of this week are officially expecting our 4th (just sent in our adoption application)!

Phyllis, thank you again for blessing us so much by creating this space! I am so thankful for you!

  6. Hi! Nice to meet you all! I'm Lori. For seven years my husband Paul and I have been living and working in Northern Thailand among a minority people group called the Akha. We have two daughters ages 4 and 1. My husband's current ministry focus is to create christian media in the Akha language, and I am a SAHM (which is a new thing for us and I'm really having a hard time adjusting to it to be quite honest!) Glad to have this place to fellowship with you all.

  7. Hola! I'm Liz and I am very pregnant. As in almost 37 weeks. Can you tell what is on my mind? In April we (My husband Noah, and our two little boys, 5 and 3) finished up our year of language school in Costa Rica. We are currently in Michigan waiting for baby boy #3 to arrive. In September, we are heading back to Costa Rica to join the work at Campamento Roblealto, a Christian camp just north of the capital city. My husband will be working with the college aged counselors and volunteers. I will be mostly be Mom to our three boys, but I will be able to help out some too. Glad for this space!

    1. Liz, we are in Costa Rica, too. In fact, I peeked at your blog and we went to the same language school (we were there in 2008)... AND, we just visited Campamento Robleato a couple of months ago! Small world! Robleato is a beautiful place; it's exciting to know that a new family will be working there.

  8. Hi I'm Andrea. I am from Australia. My husband David and I, along with their three children (6,5,3), volunteer at the ZOE Children’s Home in Chiang Mai, Thailand with a wonderful group of missionaries and Thai staff. We moved over here in January 2010.
ZOE Children’s Homes rescue orphans and children from human trafficking and they are dedicated to providing a nurturing home that offers hope and a future to these rescued children. Thanks for starting a new place to read about what God is doing all around the world.

  9. Shalom! I'm Jolene, wife of David missionary-evangelist in Ukraine. We've been there for 10 years, but because of visa issues we have been in here Israel for the last 3 months, and what an adventure it has been! We have four children, ages 10, 7, 5, and 1. My hubby is a 3rd generation missionary, but I was bus-kid who was blessed to be married into his wonderful heritage. It is a pleasure to "meet" you all!

  11. hi, I'm Kara. I serve together with my husband in St Petersburg, Russia. We have the joy of living near Ashley, though we're on separate teams. We have served with Cru in Russia since 1998, with a few gaps for training, support raising, birthing babies and visa problems. (One of our favorite years was spent in Kyiv!)

We have three kids-- boys aged 10 and 8, and a 5-year-old girl. They have all been in full-time national school or preschool for hte last two years, but in September we're transitioning to full-time homeschool.

  12. Hi my name is Melissa and my husband, Daniel, and I serve in North Africa. I've lived overseas since 2005, first serving in Central Asia as a single for 3.5 years, and then here in North Africa since getting married 3 years ago. We have a one year old son, Peter, so i am new mom and just trying to figure out the balance of doing ministry and having kids. Motherhood has been a big adjustment for me but I'm loving it and getting to know Jesus better through all the challenges.

  13. My name is Valerie Ntiganzwa and my husband and I serve in Rwanda, Africa. My husband is Rwandese and we met and were married here in Rwanda. He is a pastor and I serve along side of him and am also working with women's ministry in the church and community. We have a one year old boy, Benjamin, and a ten year old boy, Ivan, who was an orphan but now lives with us as our son! It is quite a challenge balancing motherhood and ministry especially when my oldest speaks only Kinyarwanda (which I am learning as well). It is exciting for me to find a blog community of missionary moms like this one because I can get to feeling quite alone at times (we live in the rural, with few other foreigners). God bless you all!

  14. Hi, I'm Danielle! My husband Jon and I do urban ministry in San Salvador, El Salvador. We have two kids Victoria (age 7) and Ian (age 5). We work with kids at risk and the homeless, and we also have a discipleship ministry to young adults. I help out the ministry by organizing a kids' program in a slum and working with the prositute ministry. I still struggle to balance it all, but I'm glad to connect with this community of mothers!

  16. Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a new reader to For Missionary Moms, so I was disappointed it was closing down, but so thankful for this new space! My husband Rusty and I just moved to Ecuador about six weeks ago. We live in Quito for now, but our work will be mostly in the jungle in northwest Ecuador. We have three boys -- Alex (6), Stephen (3), and Benjamin (9 months). We are homeschooling, just starting out, with a fair amount of trepidation, I might add! I grew up in Kenya, and after I married my husband, we spent four years as English teachers in Japan. Recently, we were in Portugal for almost 2 years, so I am not new to life abroad, just new to South America!

    2. My parents spent 12 years in Kisumu, working with the Luo and Luya tribes, then moved to Nairobi and spent 11 years there doing a church plant in Koma Rock. I was born in the Nairobi Hospital in 1977, but my younger brother was born in Kijabe Hospital. I went to Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi (big rivals of RVA, haha!) from 7th-12th grade, graduated in 1995, then went back to the U.S. (Oregon) for college.

  18. Hi! My name is Tammy and we have served in East Africa for about 16 years. Our ministry is church planting in the villages surrounding the city of Mwanza, Tanzania. I used to be a homeschooling mom of 3, but my two oldest have graduated and are back in America. My youngest is at the Rift Valley Academy for missionary kids. This being my first year with an "empty nest" I'm still trying to figure it all out. I do enjoy working with the pastor/leader wives and other opportunities the Lord brings my way.

    1. We have some missionary friends in Mwanza -- Eric and Susan Guild. Eric's parents are long-time family friends. They worked with my parents in Kenya for a few years back in the 70's. My husband also knew Eric growing up -- after his parents returned to the States, they settled in Oregon for awhile. Not sure if you know them or not, but it's been my experience that missionary types tend to at least know of each other, even ones from different churches!

  19. Hola desde Costa Rica! My name is Sarah and I am wife to a wonderful man and mommy to two sweet kids, ages 4 and 18 months. My first experiences with missions were in Ukraine and Russia and those places are still very dear to my heart (and so I've loved hearing from so many in those areas on For Missionary Moms!) But, we now live in a small town in Costa Rica, where we serve with Engineering Ministries International and in our local church. We moved here when our oldest was only 3 months old, so I've been in the baby/toddler/pregnant stage as long as we've been here. There have been many blessings, but also many challenges to being a new mom and a new missionary at the same time. I'm looking forward to sharing life with you ladies here!
