Tuesday Together: Gardening

It's springtime here. Do you have a garden? Tell us about it! Or do you live in a city setting? Do you miss greenery, then? Is gardening a big part of the culture around you?

Also, as always, if you have a question you want to discuss with the community, or another idea for our weekly time together, please write to me at fylliska@gmail.com.

  1. Yes, we have a garden! We live in the city, but we have enough green space to grow vegetables and raise chickens. My husband does most of the gardening and it's a great way to de-stress. I love having all the fresh stuff to cook!

  2. We haven't ever had a vegetable garden. It's a little tricky here b/c the sun is very intense and we have major issues with leaf-cutter ants! People often end up building raised beds enclosed in dense screening to grow vegetables. Fruit trees, however, are abundant, and it's easy to get mangoes, lemons, bananas, oranges, and many other fruit from your own yard or from your neighbors and friends. We recently moved out of a neighborhood that was literally in a mango grove to a house in a setting that feels a little more urban and I really miss having trees and free fruit!

  3. I'm sorry you miss it, Sarah!

Danielle, we live in a similar situation now, and I just love it. Everyone here grows food, and it's always been something I love talking about and learning from others on. Ukrainians and Russians are very connected to the land.

  4. What a fun topic! I dream of having a garden someday! We live in very urban St. Petersburg, Russia, so we sadly don't have any sort of garden. I've thought of growing something on our balcony, but our air is very polluted and everything gets covered with dark gray dirt, so I wouldn't eat anything grown out there. I think having a yard is the biggest thing that I miss about life in the US (besides family). Russian people here do whatever they can to get out of the city as much as possible during the summer. Many people have a small rustic summer cottage out in a village somewhere outside of the city. We've thought of renting one of those some year. I would love to just be able to send my kids outside to play, but as it is, I need to go out with them every time they go outside, and our outside areas don't have grass to run in or trees to climb or anything like that. I love hearing about the different natural surroundings and types of yards and environments you are all in! So interesting!

    1. Dacha life how I survive in apartments. Sadly, it would probably be harder for you in such a big city. How about herbs and lettuce inside a window? That's what I did in Moscow, before children and before dacha. :-)
